TMUA Overview

The TMUA, or Test of Mathematics for University Admission, is a test that focuses on the mathematical thinking and reasoning skills needed for a degree in maths or a maths-related course such as computer science or economics.  Questions are based on topics taught at Higher Level GCSE and the first year of A Level, but also includes ‘Sequences and Series’ which is usually taught at the start of Year 13.

There are 2 papers, taken consecutively on the same day in either October or January.  Dates for the 2026/27 academic year are 12th-16th October 2026, and 4th-8th January 2027. Note that you can only take the exam at one of these sittings, and most Cambridge/Oxford applicants must take the exam in October.

Each paper is 75 minutes long and consists of 20 multiple choice questions.

Paper 1 focuses on application of mathematical knowledge to new situations - while the subject content should be familiar, it is very likely that the style of questions will be new. For example a question might require you to sketch the graph of two different functions in order to work out how many solutions there are to an equation (by counting the number of intersections). You may be able to sketch these graphs but may not realise that this technique could be helpful in this question.

Paper 2 tests mathematical reasoning and ability to deal with simple ideas using elementary logic. This is often an area that students have not had much experience of, and they will need to learn some new terminology and practise analysing mathematical arguments and thinking ‘logically’.

There are a number of important differences between A Level Maths and the TMUA exam:

  • You will not have a calculator - this means you will need to be confident with mental arithmetic and know the exact values for trig functions of common angles. Also you can not rely on a calculator to solve equations or produce graphs.

  • There is no formula booklet - you will need to learn the formulae for summing series, binomial expansion and the trapezium rule.

  • There is significant time pressure, with 20 questions to complete in 75 minutes.

  • Many of the questions may be entirely unfamiliar and will test your ability to apply mathematical reasoning and known concepts to completely unfamiliar scenarios.

TMUA Scores

The TMUA is scored by taking your total marks over both papers (out of 40) and converting this to a single scaled score. This scaled score is given to one decimal place and ranges from 1.0 (low) to 9.0 (high). The scale is reportedly adjusted each year depending on the difficulty of the paper so that a typical candidate scores around 4.5, with the top 10% of candidates scoring above 7.0 (although the results data from 2024 and 2025 does not quite match up with this).

It is important to note that the current scale was introduced in 2024 (by adjusting the previous scale) which has had the effect of making people think that the exam has got much harder! It may well be true that the exam is getting harder, but just be careful when comparing scores from older papers: a score of 7.0 from a past paper in 2022 put you in the top 15% of candidates, but you only need to get a score of 5.5 - 6.0 to make the top 15% in 2024 or 2025. 

The conversion from raw score to scaled score has not been published for the last few years, but based on the candidate data from 2024 and 2025, and conversions from prior years, I would suggest the following as a rough guideline:

  • Top third of candidates need a Scaled Score of 4.5 (equivalent to 2016-2023 Scaled Score of 6.0-6.5)

which requires 21-24 raw marks.  

  • Top 10% of candidates need a Scaled Score of 6.5 (equivalent to 2016-2023 Scaled Score of 7.2-7.3)

which requires 27-30 raw marks.
